about

in 2012 I visited Phnom Penh and found it to be a charming and vibrant city. While there I went to the Toul Sleng Museum. This was a school that the Khmer Rouge converted into a prison during their reign from 1975-79. In that time period the prison processed about 17,000 people - less than a dozen survived. The rest were tortured and killed in the outskirts of town ("the Killing Fields") and at the prison itself. The Khmer Rouge also kept meticulous records and the museum is filled with hundreds of photos of the victims. If you were sent there, your family went too - from babies to grandparents. There is most definitely evil in the world and this was a stark reminder. In current times, I've seen the same thing albeit on a smaller scale, in Afghanistan with the Taliban. It makes me think of the adage that "all it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing." This is about a dark a song as I ever hope to write. The photo was from Toul Sleng.

lyrics

Lyrics:
Looking at the wall, the faces from a different time
A child, a mother, and a young man's eyes
A look of resignation binds them all
And they know, the Beast was there

Memories faded the physical suffering has passed
May you rest in peace and find your happiness at last
An Enemy of the State, a notion imposed by man
A darkness painted by our own hand

The eyes of the girl on the wall reflect her soul, a window of madness,
A sadness in her eyes, devoid of all hope
A child, her innocence betrayed
Labeled an Enemy of the State
A life ended through a cruel twist in fate
And they know, the beast was there

Memories faded the physical suffering has passed
May you rest in peace and find your happiness at last
An Enemy of the State, a notion imposed by man
A darkness painted by our own hand
